Learning to drive can be a daunting task for many people. We at Progress Driver Training are able to assist even the most nervous, anxious and even phobic of new drivers. We have available for you, an automatic car, which means the chore of clutch control and gear selection is removed from learning to drive. Many people find this to be the best method for learning to drive. If you have ever struggled with driving and have only ever used a manual gearbox car, that is one with a clutch pedal then you really ought to try an automatic car. It really could mean that your independence is not that far away after all. Driving should be a pleasure, never a chore and at Progress Driver Training, our auto school will help you to develop the skills and knowledge required to help you develop as a confident driver who can handle just about any driving situation with confidence. The biggest cause of fear and fright is the element of surprise! If we as drivers are taken by surprise it is unlikely that we will be able to deal with developing situations, some of them developing very quickly indeed. Driving an automatic gearbox car, will allow you more time to develop thinking skills that are harder to develop learning to drive in a manual car. For more information on driving automatic cars, contact us today. Our only automatic car is in Inverclyde and available for driving lessons, Semi-intensive and intensive courses. |

LEARNER DRIVING COURSES
are now available at the following driving test centre areas: Saltcoats,
Greenock, Paisley. There are many reasons for choosing to learn to drive in an automatic car. The most common reason is that is easier to drive. The need for gear selections and clutch usage is removed as the vehicle management system ensures that you are always in the correct gear for the requirements of the road.
Learning to drive in an automatic car makes driving more enjoyable as it removes some of the stress that drivers feel when in traffic queues, by having no clutch pedal there is less wear and tear on the mechanical components of the vehicle which in return is good for your pocket as you will not need to shell out for burned out clutches due to driving in congestion regularly.
Learning to drive in an automatic car is arguably safer! It allows you to spend more time concentrating on the road ahead and being able to identify hazardous situations earlier you will be more able to deal with them effectively in a safe manner.
In an automatic car, the main difference is the lack of clutch pedal, there is only a brake pedal to the left and an accelerator (gas) pedal to the right. Under normal driving situations you can send your left leg to sleep as you only use your right foot to operate the foot pedals.
There is still a gear selector lever. Under normal driving conditions you will drive forwards using the “Drive” selection most commonly although there are holding gear selections for steep uphill and downhill gear selections for when you need to keep the car in a lower gear. Your driving instructor will help you to understand this more fully.

Recently, (early 2007) there was information released to the press by some major car manufacturers regarding the new hybrid type of engines which stated that there are too many technical difficulties in providing a manual gearbox with these vehicles and that over time, most if not all vehicles built will have hybrid engines and also automatic gearboxes fitted. The press hailed it as “The End of the Stick Shift”, in their own inimitable way.
Though at Progress Driver Training we believe that this may be a decade or more away we certainly feel that the reports are accurate. So that begs the question, why should we learn to drive in a manual gearbox car? Personally, I have no answer to give you, it is a personal choice and one that you really should give careful consideration to.
If you pass your driving test in an automatic car, your driving licence is restricted to automatic and semi-automatic gearbox cars. If you want to drive a manual you will at a later date have to take another practical driving test in a manual car, although I personally can think of no particular reason for ever wanting to do so.
The automatic car we use in our fleet is the Peugeot 206 1.4LX, it is a very comfortable car with height adjustable seat and an adjustable steering wheel too in order for you to get into the most comfortable driving position possible. The car has air conditioning for your comfort on hot days and dual controls for your safety at all times.
If you want to know more, phone me on our freephone number at the top of this page. If you are requiring an intensive driving course and don't live in the areas we cover. Why not consider a Residential intensive Driving course? |

What is the difference between a manual car and an automatic car? Quite simply the easiest thing to spot is the lack of a clutch pedal. Automatic cars have no need for a clutch pedal as it selects the most appropriate gear itself for the load upon the engine at the time. Modern automatic cars can have as many as seven gears, to make each gear change almost seemless where you don't even notice the change, they also are much more environmentally friendly than their counterparts of several years ago where they were heavier and less fuel efficient. Some automatic cars have a natural tendency to creep, this is beneficial when moving off on an uphill, it also makes controlling the car for reversing manoeuvres much easier. Automatic cars are fast becoming the future! Make sure you know how to drive one, contact us today to book your training sessions. |
